The Bali tiger was the first tiger subspecies to go extinct, recorded as doing so in the 1940’s according to the IUCN, with the last documented specimen killed in 1937 (source) although reports of sighting persisted over the next few decades.
Confined to the small island of Bali, their small population was further fragmented with a rapid increase in human population by the early twentieth century. Treated as pests, culling efforts were encouraged and European hunting parties wiped them out completely during the Dutch colonial period.
